Reshaping of prominent or weak jawlines can be done in 30 minutes to 2 hours. Local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia may be used. Usually an outpatient procedure, but overnight hospital stay may be necessary occasionally. Temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, numbness and/or stiffness may be experienced. In jaw surgery, inability to open mouth fully for several weeks may be experienced. Back to work is possible in about 1 week. Activities that could jar or bump the face can only be done after 6 weeks or more.

Botulinum toxin is a purified substance that is derived from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin can block nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. It can be used to soften a square jaw line to create a more V-shaped face.
